I have decided to look back at some previous paintings to understand how my current work is developing. These paintings were made when I started my initial research into the punctum. These paintings were my initial experiments in relation to the punctum, and the artist’s ability to manipulate it. I was experimenting with applying a subtle blur to certain areas of the painting in order to re-direct and control the viewer’s vision and perception of the image- trying to take control of how the viewer observes the image; how much attention the viewer gives to certain aspects of the image and how this influences the perception of a punctum.
Researching some new artists that work from photographs and address themes relevant to my project. I chose this artist, Michelangelo Pistoletto as these mirror paintings relate to my thinking about the Punctum…The use of a single, isolated image got me thinking about selecting an object from an unary photograph and isolating it in order to artificially turn it into a Punctum- perhaps this is possible? The mirror makes the rest of the image recede into the background, making the painted figure act as a Punctum…
